Heath and others stockhold er. F. H. Bosbee, Esq., returned today from Beaufort county and brought news of a very strange and sensational trial. In the 76th, N. 0. Supreme Court re ports there is the case of a man named Brooks tried for rape, it being in evi dence that he personated the woman's husband, The court held that it was not rape; that fraud was not rape. The legislature in 1881 accordingly enacted a Uw to meet such a case. Up to that time such a case bad never been tried In the State and some thought there would never be another. The legislative act made the offense rape and fixed the min imum penalty at ten years In the peni tentiary. Charles Williams was this week tried for the same offence and con victed. He attempted to prove knowl edge on the woman's part, but the lat ter's evidence promptly convicted him. The Baptist State convention here has almost completed its work. It is the largest ever held. It holda three eec aions a day. It decides to raise $85,000 this year and (79,000 next year for higher educa tion among the Baptists, and has already raised $15,000 of the $29,000. Chief Justice W. T. Fairolotb gave $1000, Den nis Simmons of Washington $300, W Q. Daniel 500, the First Baptist Church here $3500, the Baptist Tabernacle here $1500. the Church at Wake Forest $1000 etc. Today one of the features of dis cussion was the management of the church paper, the Biblical Recorder, that is whether the owners, EJwards and Broughton, or the counties shall die tate Its policy. Two gentlemen of the same name are here, Ur. John 0. Drewry, alderman of llalelgh, and Mr. John U. Drewry, gov ernment official and and miner, of Brit ish Columbia. They met first this year, in Canada, and the British Columbian Is visiting the Raleigh man. Each Is named after bis maternal grandfather, each has a brother named William and each has lost a brother named James. They are of about the same size and look alike.
